Dark Circles

Dark circles are found under the eyes. The skin in this area is naturally thin and delicate.

As we age the amount of skin and fat in this area thins out, making blood vessels more noticeable, creating the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

Dark circles can also be hereditary and run in families.

People with fair skin or deep-set eyes typically have dark circles that are more noticeable than in other physical body types.

Dark circles can also appear when someone is tired and hasn’t had enough rest, and a result of airborne allergies, such as dust, pet dander, or pollen. When your eyes itch, you rub them and this can increase the occurrence.

Dark circles around the eyes can also indicate gluten intolerance. Gluten intolerance is a severe allergy to wheat flour and in its severe form this allergic reaction is known as celiac disease.

Smoking can cause dark circles to look worse, so if you can avoid cigarettes this will help their appearance. It is also important to drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep. Also if your eyes itch you need to avoid rubbing them and use a cool damp cloth to gently clean them of any irritants.

Natural Remedies for Dark Circles:

There are many preventive things you can do to lesson the impact of dark circles forming under your eyes. Sun damage can make them worse. Make sure to shade your eyes and use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 in order to prevent more evident damage.

Iron Supplements:

Often iron deficiency anemia can cause dark, bluish tinted circles below your eyes. If you suspect that you might be anemic you should check with your health care professional and consider adding an iron supplement to your diet.

Teabag Soak:

This home remedy has been around for as long as there have been teabags. Use cheap, black tea bags for this. Herbal teas typically aren’t effective. Soak the teabags for a few minutes in hot water, then pull out and allow to cool, before placing over your eyes. Lay in a dark room for up to 30 minutes with the teabags resting on your closed eyelids.

Cucumber Slices:

Fresh cool slices placed over closed eyelids for at least fifteen minutes. Follow the teabag remedy and allow yourself to lie down in a dark room while you are doing this.

Vitamins:

Vitamin C taken internally helps to strengthen blood vessel walls and can help prevent the appearance of bruising under the eyes. Vitamin K in topical cream form can be gently applied under the eyes to help get rid of the external bruising.
