Pest Control

With so many different chemicals harming our environment, it’s important to learn how to control pests with some home remedies that are safer not only for the environment but for other living things as well. Most of the insecticides and poisons that are on the market for keeping the pests away from our homes and gardens contain chemicals or poisons that are harmful to other things including humans. Add that to the fact that the aerosol sprays harm the ozone layer of our earth, and you can fully understand the importance of finding more natural cures for our environmental pests.

Rat poison for one example is harmful to family pets, so you don’t want to use that anywhere that a pet might roam. Insecticides, especially the commercial variety, have potent chemicals that are harmful for a human to breathe. If you have a compromised immune system, just smelling the fumes can be harmful to your respiratory system.

In order to solve this problem, many natural cures have been developed as well as home remedies that have been passed from generation to generation. Most of these are pest-specific and will be listed accordingly.

Home Remedies For Pest Control:

How To Get Rid Of Pests:

Most natural remedies for pests are specific to certain ones, though some can be used to exterminate different ones.

Roaches:

The roach is probably everyone’s least favorite pest, but there are several natural ways to keep them at bay.

Combine four parts borax, two parts flour, and one part cocoa powder and pour in a continuous line in cabinets, under sinks, and along walls and other places they congregate.

Sprinkle boric acid lightly (too much and they won’t go near it) in your cabinets, under the sink, and other places that are safe from children and pets.

Mix Tabasco Sauce with water in a spray bottle. How strong you make it depends how bad your problem is.

Take fresh bay leaves (not the dried ones in the spice aisle at the store) and scatter through your house where they may frequent.

The most important part of getting rid of roaches is to seal any areas where they may be able to enter. Seal holes in walls, cabinets, doors, windows, and anywhere else you can to prevent them getting in. This is especially important in apartment buildings where they can travel from apartment to apartment.

Rodents:

Although some think of them as inhumane, mousetraps are probably the only environmentally safe way to rid your home of rodents. New electrical ones are now available that are more humane and still kill the rats and mice without the use of poisons.

Bees And Wasps:

The best advice for this one is to hire a professional beekeeper to get rid of the bees for you. There are hundreds of varieties, and some are not harmful whatsoever, and the bumblebee is endangered, and thus cannot be killed.
